CII and BMGI Presents Innovation as the Key Catalyst for Make in India at the 5th Manufacturing Innovation Conclave

The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's initiative of 'Make in India' has been widely welcomed by organizations and industry bodies alike. For such an aspiration to become a reality, there needs to be catalyst that supports the journey. The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and Breakthrough Management Group India (BMGI) appear to have answered this question at their 5th Manufacturing Innovation Conclave, which was held around the theme: Innovation as the Key Catalyst for Make in India. As the knowledge partner for the event held at ITC Maurya, New Delhi on the 19th June 2015, BMGI set the theme and the context. The event was organized by CII, which works to create and sustain an environment conducive to the growth of industry in India.

The event comprised thought leaders from across the world with senior management representations from reputed organizations like Rolls-Royce India Pvt Ltd, Cummins India Ltd., Tata Consultancy Services, Ricoh India, Hero Motor Corp, Tata Power Ltd., Punj Lloyd Group to name a few and representations from industrial and governing bodies like the National Research Development Corporation (NRDC).

The key takeaways from the event were the learning that it is important to foster the culture of innovation, there cannot be a structure for innovation, synergy between creativity and innovation, mindset which played a key role to create, adopt and specified that everyone in the organization has a role to play. Ultimately innovation is necessary to drive India ahead with focus on sowing seeds for academia, leveraging 3D printing, PLM and simple innovation techniques.

Sameer Gupta, Chairman, CII Manufacturing Innovation Conclave '15 & Chairman CII - UP State Council & Managing Director, Jakson Group, welcomed the guests and provided the opening remarks. Underlining the importance of innovation for a country's growth and well-being, he compared the R&D spends by various developed and developing countries in the world.

Nirmalya Banerjee, Business Head at BMGI, explored the reasons why anyone would want to manufacture in a particular country. Explaining that the reasons couldn't go beyond making it cheaper, better or faster, he shared that India needs to currently move beyond making manufacturing cheaper for global organizations to come and 'Make in India'. Mr Banerjee reinforced that innovation can make this possible and open up possibilities for developing multiple alternatives for carrying out the same solution. He signed off by sharing that India has been a follower by executing and scaling up products innovated elsewhere, but it is time for India to innovate, leverage available frameworks and realize the aspiration of 'Make in India'.

In the era of start-ups and innovation appearing to be originating from smaller organizations, how do large organizations manage innovation? Dr. Kurichi Kumar, Head of Engineering, Rolls Royce India Pvt Ltd, shared the practices Rolls Royce adopts to manage innovation. He shared the sourcing of ideas through well networked universities around the world and collaboration with suppliers that fits into the structure of Generate - Develop - Review - Select process for innovation that is managed through a portal.

How can diversity bring about Innovation? Sandeep Sinha, Chief Operating Officer, Cummins India Ltd., answered this question by narrating the practices in his organization that has worked and has been delivering results. Bringing out various dimensions of innovation like people, environment, process and engineering, Mr. Sinha highlighted specific examples of innovations to make it easier for women to work on the shop-floor.

Dr. H Purushotham Chairman & Managing Director, National Research Development Corporation (NRDC), Government of India, shared the perspective and initiatives of the entity towards making the 'Make in India' initiative a reality. The initiatives he shared included offerings that include providing financial assistance for prototyping, support on filing patents and generating IPRs. He shared how his organization made it possible to have over 2,000 technologies with facilitating close to 5,000 license agreements.

Presiding as the chairperson for the next session, Dr. Jitendra K Das, Director, FORE School of Management, welcomed the guests to share their thoughts on leveraging human brain power to create and incubate ideas to develop potential solutions. He emphasised on how innovation cannot be structured or instructed, but is an evolving process.

Dr. Gautam Shroff, Vice President & Chief Scientist, Tata Consultancy Services, in his talk about the leadership role in creating innovative organization, stated innovation was critical to survival and is an organization wide culture across the organization and not restricted to the research and development department. He suggested the key was to have an ecosystem and referred to TCS' initiative of a homegrown social network, providing forums for various events, competitions to drive the culture while recognizing and incubating ideas.

What does it take to convert an invention into an innovation? Varun Gadhok, Country Head - Manufacturing Solutions, India & SAARC, Autodesk India Pvt Ltd., in his perception about 'The Innovation Genome (TIG) - Making organization powerful', shared the invention genome initiative by Autodesk. He emphasized on how having the three essentials are very crucial for innovation, which are - toolset (which can be externally bought at any point of time), skillset (which can be hired and groomed) and mindset (which can only be created from within).

Can we make the logic world and the manufacturing world talk? Gautam Dutta, Senior Director - Marketing, Siemens Industry Software (India) Private Limited, showed how this is possible in his speech about 'Innovation - making organization future ready by leveraging digital marketing'. As he stated the fact that 'there is a dearth of aspiration to join the manufacturing industry', he expressed how talents are lost to other fields and thus creating a decline in the evolution of manufacturing industry.

Archana Shahrawat, Regional Head - Manufacturing Vertical, Ricoh India Ltd., in her talk on Manufacturing Innovation - its role in creating innovative product line, shared the entire supply chain from transformational requirements from design to manufacturing to after sales supply chain; key factors for production and their implications for modern manufacturing - time, quality and cost.

Nirmalya Banerjee, Business Head at BMGI, moderated the panel discussion that comprised of senior leaders from various industries to share their insights on "Design (R & D) in India - key for success of companies". Sriram Ramakrishnan,Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, Consul Neowatt Power Solutions Pvt Ltd., Vikram S Kasbekar, Head - Operations & Supply Chain, Hero MotoCorp Ltd , Rahul Chaudhary, Chief Executive Officer, Tata Power Ltd (Strategic Engineering Division), Pankaj Dubey, Managing Director & Country Head, Polaris India Private Limited and Raj Singh Rathee, Managing Director, Kuka Robotics India were the panelists. Mr. Banerjee asked his panelists if they agreed that innovation was the pathway to realize the dream of 'Make in India'.

Rajiv Bajaj, General Manager, India, Stratasys AP Ltd, shared his insights on how additive manufacturing is helping companies push the limits of innovation while reducing costs, streamlining operations and accelerating time to market in his talk on 'Push the limits' of innovation with 3D Printing through videos and examples. He left the audience pondering with his video on how 3D printing converted dreams to reality.

Could we imagine not using stainless steel today? Yatinder Suri, Managing Director & Country Head, Outokumpu India, in his talk on innovation and growth of the organization, spoke about the success story of stainless steel. He expressed how corrosion of iron led to the existence of the stainless steel industry. It's a myth that innovation is expensive. He narrated how Outokumpu emerged as one of the largest producers of stainless steel and the products application as of today has no boundaries.

Innovation doesn't just happen. Innovation happens and many often the idea is not even converted into reality. Ibadat Singh, Vice President - Operations, DataWind, in his talk on Leveraging Creativity into Product Reality, explained how Data Wind captured the 2G-network unavailability in most parts of the country. He explained how low price was not a strategy and revolutionizing the same was the key.

Vinod K Pandita, Founder & Chief Executive Officer, PMC India in his talk on innovation to reduce product life cycle development time, shared that reducing the PLM has been a key challenge for most manufacturing companies, especially the OEMs and SMEs, which have to thrive despite the challenging economic conditions.

Shailendra Singh, General Manager, Maruti Suzuki India Ltd, in his speech on innovative methods in material handling innovations, shared examples of innovation from his experience that emerged from the bottom of the pyramid that included deploying energy-free mechanisms, gravity feed mechanisms, and simplicity in stock visibility.
