Patient From Bangladesh Fit for Renal Transplant After Undergoing Bariatric Surgery at Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences

KOLKATA, January 27, 2016 /PRNewswire/ --

Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS) announced the successful weight-loss surgery of a 53-year-old lady from Bangladesh who was initially declared unfit for renal transplant. Mrs. Razia Begum was presented at RTIICS with chronic kidney disease (Stage 5) and was on maintenance haemodialysis at that time. A renal transplant was recommended as the only option to save her life. During optimization for Renal Transplant, she was deemed unfit for transplant due to her morbid obesity by the transplant team. Therefore, she was referred to the department of Bariatric Surgery at RTIICS and underwent a weight-loss surgery. Post the surgery, the patient lost 15 kilos within 2 weeks, and has now been declared fit for a renal transplant.

As the dietary restriction and medication to lose weight did not work, the patient was referred to the Bariatric Surgery department for a formal assessment. In her assessment it was found that her BMI was as high as 38 kg/m2, while the optimal BMI is within the range of 21 kg/m2 to 25 kg/m2. Efforts to lose weight through dietary restrictions and medications had failed. After evaluation by the team, it was decided that the patient would benefit from a Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG), which would aid in her weight reduction. She was then counseled for Bariatric Surgery, which included psychological counseling along with a review of her medical history. After being on strict diet and exercise, she was admitted a day prior to the surgery and dialysis was done.

Commenting on this case, Dr. Shubhayu Banerjee, Consultant - Advanced Laparoscopic, Gastro Intestinal and Bariatric Surgeon said, "Renal transplantation is a life saving option for most patients with end-stage renal disease. However, availability of kidney donor is limited and therefore, selection of patients who are likely to have a positive outcome remains an important issue. Basis this, obesity is often considered a hindrance to successful outcome especially those with morbid obesity. To add on, morbid obesity has added risks as in the case of this patient, who was also suffering from asthma and hypertension." Commenting on why weight-loss is important for a renal transplant patient, he said, "There is not much study on this. But the chances of transplant rejection and related complications are quite high. The outcome of renal transplant is compromised if the patient is overweight. Hence, this patient underwent a Bariatric procedure to get her renal transplant done."

Shape Clinic is a dedicated center for Bariatric Surgery available across units of Narayana Health in Eastern India covering Jamshedpur in Jharkhand and Guwahati in Assam. Shape Obesity & Metabolic Clinic is led by experienced Laparoscopic surgeons. It has been accepted that one of the most important factors behind leading a healthy life and keeping diseases at check, is to maintain the right BMI (Body Mass Index).

In reference to the surgery, Dr. Sanjay Kumar Dubey, Consultant - General, Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon at RTIICS, said, "Sleeve Gastrectomy is one of the most popular and effective surgical technique where a considerable portion of stomach is blocked causing restriction in calorie intake, with least interference to the normal gut physiology, thus achieving desirable weight and addressing the associated co-morbid conditions."

'SHAPE - The weight loss clinic' at Rabindranath Tagore International Institute of Cardiac Sciences (RTIICS) addresses the facts, causes, health risks and the treatment options for obesity. The Shape Clinic at RTIICS is operational from Monday to Saturday from 9 AM to 4 PM. The clinic within the hospital is supported by team of doctors from different specialties to ensure the desired outcomes. This implies the services of the Bariatric surgeon are clubbed with other multi-disciplinary services such as Psychiatry, Plastic Surgery, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Pulmonology, Diet & Nutrition as well as Physiotherapy.

Commenting on the same, Deepak Venugopalan, Zonal Director - East, Narayana Health said, "The average amount of weight-loss through medical treatment is relatively small and there is a tendency to regain weight. Weight-loss surgery is increasingly being viewed as the effective means to manage weight and keep the co-morbidities of being obese at bay." Commenting on the launch of Shape Clinic, he said, "We have seen that there is a rise in the number of people showing interest in weight-loss surgery as an effective means to a healthier life. Keeping the same in perspective, we are reaching out through our other centers in Eastern India to ensure that this health service is available to those beyond the purview of only this city."

Being overweight or obese greatly raises the risk for other co-morbid health problems such as heart ailments, hypertension, diabetes, osteoarthritis and sleep disorders. An obese person is typically susceptible to cholesterol, liver and gall bladder problems as well, bringing down his or her overall quality of life. The Shape Clinic is an initiative that has been particularly taken to improve the quality of life for those who are affected by the co-morbidities associated with obesity.

Having lost 15 kilos of weight after the Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy - the most commonly performed Bariatric Surgery, Razia Begum now eagerly awaits her next and the most critical procedure to save her life - a renal transplant.
