The Great Dawoodi Bohra Cook-off: A Celebration Of Community and Family Values

It was a joyous Thursday afternoon as six of Mumbai's most prolific food influencers came together to partake in a cook-off that brought the Dawoodi Bohra community, its culture and cuisine, all under one roof. The Great Dawoodi Bohra Cook-off, powered by the DBWRF saw around 60 members gather at the Dawoodi Bohra Jammat in Kandivali for an evening of food, fellowship and fun. 

The contest began with a few words of encouragement from chief guest and judge, chef Sanjeev Kapoor, following which, the event kicked off in style. The cook-off pitted the bloggers against each other in a stunning display of culinary brilliance. The passionate gastronomists drew lots to pick a signature Dawoodi Bohra dish which constitutes a thaal and then cooked some mouth-watering dishes which included Kalamro, Kheema Samosa, Dabba Gosht, Dal Chawal Palidu, Masala Na Bateta and Rotis.  

The evening continued on a food high as participants at the cook-off, Sanjeev Kapoor and members from the community tucked into a hearty feast around the thaal, highlighting their unique habits and the importance of eating together. 

The concept of the thaal is as intriguing as Dawoodi Bohra cuisine itself. The style of eating traces its roots back to the very origins of Islam, which believes in equality and is reflected in the way they eat. Members of the community sit together around the thaal and relish their meal, irrespective of their backgrounds. Unlike the vast majority of cultures, a traditional Bohra meal begins with dessert and ends with the main course.

Bohra cuisine is an amalgamation of Gujarati, Arabic, Yemeni, and Persian cuisines, and is in many ways a physical testament to the history of the Bohra people. 

Admiring the community for their unique traditions, Chef Sanjeev Kapoor said, "I am elated to have been a part of this glorious celebration of great food and a beautiful culture. Dawoodi Bohras are culturally rich and their food is steeped in tradition. It was great to be a part of an initiative that celebrated this spirit and see the enthusiasm among the community to highlight their culture."

Riding on the wave of success of the first edition of The Great Dawoodi Bohra Cook-off, the community is already looking forward to taking this idea across the country, in a bid to explore and highlight their culture and the spirit of harmony.


In May 2017, a few Dawoodi Bohra women stalwarts initiated a movement to bring together the Dawoodi Bohra Women of India on a common platform to preserve and protect the beliefs, customs, culture and religious rights of Dawoodi Bohra Women. And thus was born DBWRF, which today represents tens of thousands of Dawoodi Bohra women in India.
